This humble chapel has stood in the town of Roslin since 1449, and although it's fairly small inside, its intricately carved walls hold an abundance of ancient secrets. You see, Rosslyn Chapel has long been believed to be the hiding place of the world-renowned Holy Grail; with this idea being heavily reinforced by Dan Brown's bestselling novel "The Da Vinci Code". This theory was further strengthened when the delicately carved features of the chapel's ceiling were found to be hiding the stonemasonry equivalent of musical notes; an odd feature to hide on a chapel ceiling, don't you think? #DidYouKnow a significant part of whisky production lies in the oak barrel in which it's made? There are 50+ types of oak worldwide, but only a handful are suitable for making whisky! We snapped this shot on our tour of the incredible Speyside Cooperage, just outside Craigellachie, north-east Scotland. Speyside Cooperage is the last of its kind in the UK; however, the coopers remain incredibly busy and dedicated to their work, utilising ancient techniques to repair and build barrels. It is quite rare for the common traveller to see the sights and smells of this unique workshop with their own eyes, but it's even rarer for visitors to be disappointed by what they experience! Hailed as one of Scotland's most picturesque castles, Eilean Donan as it looks today was only constructed at the beginning of the 20th century. It all started back in 1719 when 46 Jacobite-supporting Spanish soldiers took siege of the original castle. The English government soon caught wind of their plan, sending three heavily armed frigates to "smooth out the matter". The massive bombardment of the castle lasted for three days, as the attackers were unable to breach the castle's 14 ft thick fortifications! Engaging a more practical approach to the matter, English soldiers landed on the island, quickly overwhelming the Spanish defenders. Upon their victory, they discovered that the Spanish Jacobites had planted an impressive 343 barrels of gunpowder at Eilean; and they promptly detonated the supply to ensure that the castle could not be recaptured. For the next 200 years, the dilapidated remains of Eilean Donan remained dormant, until Lt Colonel John Macrae-Gilstrap bought the island in 1911. He spent the next 20 years rebuilding the castle, sourcing accurate floor plans to do so. The castle was fully restored by July of 1932, and has remained a much loved Scottish icon since! This is what was remarked of the Doulton Fountain by its primary sculptor Sir Henry Doulton. Towering at an impressive height of 46 feet, the Doulton Fountain is the largest terracotta fountain in the world and was constructed to commemorate Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee of 1887. The fountain is formed of 3 colossal tiers; the first tier features inscriptions that celebrate the city of Glasgow, the tier above that represents the citizens of the 4 main British colonies at the time - Canada, South Africa, Australia and India. The apex of the fountain features a larger-than-life figure of Queen Victoria herself, who faces the city's Justiciary Courthouse. Following the internationally renowned exhibition at Kelvingrove Park, the fountain finally found its home at the west entrance of Glasgow Green in 1890, where it's flowed freely ever since! Welcome to a village so small and so narrow, cars can't even travel through it! You're looking at the idyllic coastal village of Crovie, which inhabits a small strip of land between the sea and the cliffs on the Aberdeenshire coast, north-eastern Scotland. The village was nearly destroyed during a violent January storm back in 1958, which encouraged many residents to find safer, more stable areas to live elsewhere. This chain of events halted any commercial development in Crovie, which fortunately preserved its original state. You see, Rosslyn Chapel has long been believed to be the hiding place of the world-renowned Holy Grail; with this idea being heavily reinforced by Dan Brown's bestselling novel "The Da Vinci Code".
