Welcome to Cawdor Castle. Originally built in 1454, one peculiar feature of the castle is that it was actually built around a holly tree. Legend has it that a donkey that was laden with gold lay down underneath this tree, and for this reason, the site was selected as the location for the castle.

The holly tree can actually still be seen on the lowest levels of the oldest tower! Although the castle is now home to the Dowager Countess of Cawdor, what is even more notable about the site is its surrounding gardens, which are included in the Inventory of Gardens and Designed Landscapes in Scotland. As you can see, Fife's Kellie Castle wouldn't be out of place in the pages of a fairy tale! Kellie Castle first dates back to 1150, when it served as the home of Robert of London, the illegitimate son of King William I. In 1617 it received its first Royal visitor, King James VI, when he paid a visit to his good friend and the then occupant of the castle, Sir Thomas Erskine. What's interesting about this particular visit is the preparations that were made in anticipation of the King's arrival.

The ceilings of what is now the library are the first examples of where plaster decoration was used ‘in the London style’ in preference to the painted beams and boarded ceilings that were generally fashionable in the early 17th century. This room is an absolute must see when visiting the castle! But look out, as some of the Castle's visitors throughout history never left 👻👻👻. Join Beryl and the team as we jump 1500 years into the past at the magnificent ruins of Dunnottar Castle, which clings to the cliffside of a rocky headland in Aberdeenshire, north-eastern Scotland. Once the home of the Earl Marischal's, the most powerful family in Scotland, Dunnottar has existed as a place of significance since the 4th century. 800 years later, William Wallace captured the castle from the English; notoriously burning the Garrison alive when they tried to take refuge inside the castle's chapel. The castle was eventually saved from ruin in 1925 when it was purchased and stabilised by the Pearson family; who opened the castle to visitors for the first time in its very long and very turbulent history. Welcome to Brodick Castle on the Isle of Arran, an imposing fortress that has dominated the surrounding landscape for over 1500 years. Not unlike many other historic buildings on the west coast of Scotland, Brodick has seen more than its fair share of warfare and canon fire due to its extremely strategic position on the Firth of Clyde.

It was a major centre point during the Wars of Independence and throughout conflicts during the late Middle Ages. However, the site finally found peace following years of turmoil under the hands of James Hamilton, the 1st Duke of Hamilton, who rebuilt and expanded much of the damaged castle in 1510. His family held their seat at Brodick until 1958 when it passed to the hands of the National Trust of Scotland.

Today, the castle's beautiful interior is surrounded by otherworldly gardens, including the famous Walled Garden; which has survived since 1710. It's an absolute must-see during our tours to Arran, and we can wait to share all the extraordinary stories with you; including Robert Bruce's infamous encounter with a spider whilst hiding at Brodick!
