Every tour company needs it’s much loved eccentric, and John gracefully fulfills that role with ease.

Being as Scottish as Stirling Castle and the sound of bagpipes, John joins his wife Felicitas in running the Stevenson House B&B in Edinburgh. As a lawyer-turned-gentleman of leisure, John is an absolute history buff, and loves delving deep into the how’s, who’s and why’s of Scottish literature, architecture, art and culture; of which Edinburgh is overflowing!

However, venturing through Edinburgh’s winding streets and terraces is definitely his favourite past time. The city’s stories, facts and touring tips will just flow out of John, so make sure you have plenty of questions for him, as you never know what local anecdotes you’ll learn from him.

Welcome to Brodick Castle on the Isle of Arran, an imposing fortress that has dominated the surrounding landscape for over 1500 years. Not unlike many other historic buildings on the west coast of Scotland, Brodick has seen more than its fair share of warfare and canon fire due to its extremely strategic position on the Firth of Clyde. It was a major centre point during the Wars of Independence and throughout conflicts during the late Middle Ages. However, the site finally found peace following years of turmoil under the hands of James Hamilton, the 1st Duke of Hamilton, who rebuilt and expanded much of the damaged castle in 1510. His family held their seat at Brodick until 1958 when it passed to the hands of the National Trust of Scotland. Today, the castle's beautiful interior is surrounded by otherworldly gardens, including the famous Walled Garden; which has survived since 1710. It's an absolute must-see during our tours to Arran, and we can wait to share all the extraordinary stories with you; including Robert Bruce's infamous encounter with a spider whilst hiding at Brodick! Hailed as one of Scotland's most picturesque castles, Eilean Donan as it looks today was only constructed at the beginning of the 20th century. It all started back in 1719 when 46 Jacobite-supporting Spanish soldiers took siege of the original castle. The English government soon caught wind of their plan, sending three heavily armed frigates to "smooth out the matter". The massive bombardment of the castle lasted for three days, as the attackers were unable to breach the castle's 14 ft thick fortifications! Engaging a more practical approach to the matter, English soldiers landed on the island, quickly overwhelming the Spanish defenders. Upon their victory, they discovered that the Spanish Jacobites had planted an impressive 343 barrels of gunpowder at Eilean; and they promptly detonated the supply to ensure that the castle could not be recaptured. For the next 200 years, the dilapidated remains of Eilean Donan remained dormant, until Lt Colonel John Macrae-Gilstrap bought the island in 1911. He spent the next 20 years rebuilding the castle, sourcing accurate floor plans to do so. The castle was fully restored by July of 1932, and has remained a much loved Scottish icon since!
