When you think of celebrities, chances are that the list inside your head is predominantly filled with stars from the United States. This is likely because the film / music worlds centre around Hollywood, with scenes filmed abroad but red-carpet premiers and concerts in La-La Land.
If we said Sean Connery was Scottish, you’d already know that, so how about 5 celebs you didn’t know were Scottish:
1: Karen Gillan – when she breaks out of character, it’s evident from her accent that Karen is from Scotland – Inverness to be precise, which is the capital of the Highlands. You may know her from Jumanji or Nebula in The Guardians of the Galaxy, though she’s dropped the accent for the roles.
2: Gordon Ramsay – the infamous celebrity chef was born in Johnstone, Renfrewshire but raised in Stratford-upon-Avon, England, hence the lack of any accent. Not that you could tell from his select vocabulary! Johnstone is famous for having one of the oldest cotton mills that date back to 1782.
3: Craig Ferguson – arguably one of the best American chat show hosts! Craig has since retired from The Late Late Show and became an official American citizen in 2008, but he originally comes from Glasgow – home to some beautiful architecture, often overlooked.
4: Graham McTavish – often employed as a voice actor, his vocal chords have produced magnificent narrations featured in films from The Hobbit to Rambo, to the voice of Dracula in the Netflix series Castlevania. He’s a versatile actor and proudly from Glasgow.
5: Angus & Malcolm Young – rock fans may know this already, but it’s less well known that AC/DC’s roots go back even further than Australia – all the way to Glasgow in fact! Brothers Angus and Malcolm Young were born in Scotland’s largest city and emigrated to Sydney in the early ‘60s.
There are of course some other notable names to add to the mix, but the likelihood of you knowing who Annie Lennox is, or perhaps James McAvoy is a given!
